Each week, students in Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms are recognized for the “good things” they are doing in classrooms. In addition to celebrating birthdays and taking a moment to draw from the treasure box for filling behavior cards, or receiving prizes for reaching a point club in Accelerated Reader, students receive the Principal Recognition Award during their morning opening with the principal.
Each student that receives this award is honored for a particular strength or achievement in the classroom. Teachers select based on achieving certain academic goals., making improvements in behavior or skills, or for doing something positive as a citizen of our school community. The important thing is that it is based on each individual child’s particular positive at the time the award is given.
An inside joke of the principal award is that the kids get to STAND ON A SQUARE. Part of it is to be silly, but part of it is so students can then go share the joke at home and start the conversation about the "good thing" they did to receive the award.
The weekly awards and celebrations as a grade offers a chance for students to start the day with good vibes and affirmations about what they are doing in school.
