Course Objectives:
To train personnel in expert emergency care
To protect EMT and patient from further harm
To assess and evaluate all signs and symptoms
To give prompt and efficient medical care
Proper extrication and patient packaging
To provide safe and efficient transportation
To arrange transfer of patient care to receiving medical facility
To use good communication with patient, families and medical personnel
To keep accurate documentation
To properly operate an emergency vehicle
Certifications and Eligibility: EMT Certification; Student must be enrolled in the 12th grade, receive diploma, and must turn 18 years of age prior to sitting for the EMT National Registry Exam
This course incorporates the study of how to respond to emergency calls to provide proper emergency care
to the critically ill or injured and how to handle, extricate and transport patients to a
medical facility, with the goal of saving lives. It includes determining the nature and extent
of illness or injury, establishing priorities for required emergency care, and maintaining
basic life support services (opening and maintaining airway, performing CPR, control of
bleeding, treatment of sick, bandaging wounds, care of fractures, childbirth, medical,
environmental and psychological emergencies, patient packaging, triage and disaster
management, vehicle extrication, ambulance operations and radio communication and
records). Student must complete both classroom and clinical hours and a minimum 80% grade in order to qualify to take the National Registry test.
